Pronunciation help!


These show the long vowel sounds and their spelling patterns. Each set of spellings under each letter, represents the SAME long vowel sound. For example, apex, tape, rain, pay, sleigh, vein, hey are all the same long A sound (though spelled differently).

This is the IPA vowel chart. Each of these symbols represents a particular vowel sound. While we only have the vowels A,E,I,O,U, they do make more than 5 sounds. These are monophthongs-- 'mono' meaning one sound. The video linked here has a great explanation taken from the English Language Club (UK)Vowel Sounds





This chart shows the different consonant sounds in English, some of which have different spellings for the same sound. 

These are examples of consonant blends-- meaning you blend the 2 or three consonants together.



These are basic rules for pronunciation (but OF COURSE because English can be quite complicated, there are EXCEPTIONS).

These are some basic pronunciation rules that can come in handy.
